button medals and ribbons

My sister gave me a bunch of buttons for christmas last year, sorted into 3 mason jars: white buttons, colorful buttons, and gold buttons. I had some good project ideas for the white ones and the colorful ones, but what about the gold ones? I couldn't think of anything for a long time, and then a few days ago when I had them all spilled out on the floor, it came to me: they look like medals. I would make medals with them. Very silly medals. And ribbons too. This gave the bonus fun of rummaging through all my ribbon to find suitable pieces. I made them all into pins and clips to wear, never mind in what context you would wear such a thing.

Mark and I kept coming up with fake awards to give each other. He won "kitten's choice" and I got a ribbon in ribbon-making. I think they're hilarious.

Whew, that's it for button week. Thanks for all the nice comments!

Those are fantastic. I could award them to my kids for good behaviour (occasionally!) - and myself for endsless patience under stress.

Love them ! They'd be great tacked on a purse or tote bag, or make great keychains or gift tags, or package decorations, or bookmarks or zipper pulls....

A ribbon in ribbon making, thats hilarious, and those are way too cool.

I could totally see these featured in the next J Crew catalogue.

Those look great! They'd be wonderful for giving out at kids' birthday parties! Maybe I'll start making some now for the next party...

Cute, cute idea! I've been pulling out all my metal buttons into a bag because I thought they were ugly; now I see them in a new light!

Such an original idea! I don't think I have ever seen gold buttons done up like this. Truly brilliant!

I was thinking kids' parties, too. Now I know what to do with all those nautical-themed buttons. Thanks.

ooh, I love them!

brilliant idea! i, too, always wonder what to do with the gold, gaudy buttons... like others mentioned, these would be great for kids... medals for completing chores, potty training successes, party games, etc. Thanks so much for the idea!

I love the brown/blue one all the way to the left, it's lovely! I've really enjoyed your button posts, they're so fun!

Genius idea - I love the badges. Can't wait until military chic is revived (any moment now I'm sure...)

I made a bunch of ribbon *awards* awhile back using Molly Chicken's fabric flower tutorial and embroidering words like "#1 pimp" and "#1 badass" on the streamers... They were quite the hit.

I really love these! I had a thing for medal pins like this in college, these are a nicer, grown up version than the salvation army ones I used to wear.

yes! fantastic idea. Everyone needs a medal.

Reminds me of the Wizard of OZ.

I am a big fan of that old chestnut, the Boat & Tote bag (used one for a diaper bag for each kid--each kid now has two or three of them) and I am here to tell you that I would pin those suckers all over my kids' bags and my own.

Love. Them.

My kids would love them, too.

Excellent idear.

What a lovely idea .. I am a therapeutic clown and have been looking for something to empower kids who are in too much pain to barely smile at me .. medals of bravery seem like a lovely idea and your way of making them is something I can do. Thanks! It took me an hour of surfing to find this link but I'm glad I persisted!
