* linen skirt
Posted on March 9th, 2006 by maitreya. Filed under Sewing/Fabric Crafts.
I’ve been wanting a zakka-y skirt, like this ($460) one I saw in Daily Candy this week. Curse you, Project Runway, for making me think I can make my own clothes! After watching the finale last night, I made this skirt freehand, with two hours, a yard of linen from Ikea, a scrap from The Most Useful Ikea Sheet Ever, and a ribbon. “Project Hallway” as it were.
I went with the drawstring because it seemed like the easiest way to get the gathers I wanted. But, it’s a little unflattering in the hips. I still have some of the linen, so I might make a band at the top and install a zipper instead. Hmmm.

Could you take the draw string out, unpick the hem, put some darts or pleats so there’s a little less gathered and then retry the drawstring?? Could be a cheats way of not having to put in a zip :) Looks great!

Here are a couple of links to a free gored skirt that’s super easy to put together, or another spiffy trick is to take a piece of fabric and wrap it around your hips, making sure it’s comfey, make sure the top of the piece is at a comfortable height for you and then add 2 inches, add 5/8 of an inch for the bottom hem. Once you’ve got the fabric comfortably situated around your rounder lower parts (mine are my “saddlebags”)you pin it and then you pull the fabric in on the sides around the waist to make even sized darts. I usually just hem the top with a thick width of grosgrain ribbon on the outside and some hem tape on the inside. It’s a super pattern that lets you choose your closure. Remember to leave some space open for a zipper or snaps at the fabric joins…did that make sense or should I just draw a picture?

I have no helpful hints, but plenty of sympathy for your “project runway” addiction… I’ve channelled mine to clothes for a friend’s doll collection. She even gave me a torso so that I can have a dressform.

Oh my gosh! I’m doing the same thing! Because of Project Runway, I have spent a few too many “nap time’s” in my bra and panties trying to make outfits for myself with out a dressform! It’s quite a sight.
