bird bag
I am ridiculously proud of myself for making this bag. It's been on the list for a few months now, awaiting the perfect lining fabric to go with the linen I'd gotten for the outside. I finally found a nice lining fabric at Joann's yesterday, and today I miraculously have a new bag. The pattern is from one of my Japanese craft books (info on my library page and this post at Angry Chicken.)
Remind me again why I insist on learning new crafts from books I can't read? I realized right after I cut out everything that the seam allowances aren't included on the pattern (I think), causing some minor reworking. A few other things I ended up just winging, because I couldn't for the life of me figure out what the pictures meant. I think it would've been easier if I'd ever made a lined purse before. Oh well. I figured it out. With interfacing, no less. I also got to use my nifty ruled tape to keep the topstitching even. Of course I'm going to make the matching bird-shaped coin purses (see the Angry Chicken post for pictures) eventually. I've pushed my luck enough today, though. I'm certainly not brave enough for zippers.

And by the way, is the Jeff Buckley version of Hallelujah not the most perfect song ever?

What a lovely bag !. I love your choice of fabrics.
I have a zip phobia which must be addressed - makes me hyper-ventilate just thinking about it.
Your bag is just beautiful as it is.

Thanks! Zips are for the matching change purse. The bag was made to spec with the button closure.

Hey there--just stumbled across you. The bag turned out great...very beautiful! I've been leaving puddles of drool all over the place every time I see something made from any of the japanese craft books.
Ditto on Jeff Buckley's cover of Hallelujah too! The live version has a neat switch-over to the Smiths' I Know It's Over.

Your bag is beautiful! On Craftster there is a tutorial for making a lined zipper pouch. It worked for me! Just type "zippered pouch tutorial" in the search window. All of your stuff is so cute!

your bag turned out great! way to make out the pictures and tiny arrows. it hurt my head for the 20 minutes i stared at it, thus the tshirt instead of the bag. cant wait to see the coin purse!

Beautiful!

Thanks for all the compliments! Robin, I used ruled tape to keep my stitching even. I found it at a quilting store somewhere. It's got little evenly spaced stripes so you have something to aim for, then it peels right off.

WOW! I've been wanting to get a hold of that book since I saw Amy's post. It's fun to see someone who's acutally made the purse I was most admiring -- fantastic job!

Wow, that is so adorable! I can't believe it's the first bag you made!! Seems like you made the right decision by waiting for the right lining fabric- what a great eye for design.
