eggs
The Martha swirled eggs are not as easy as they sound in the magazine. It works if you break up the oil a whole lot and then roll the egg around the dye just until the whole thing's coated. Even then they don't look quite like the pictures.

My kids & I gave these a try last Easter, I'm so glad to know it wasn't me. They gave up completely, and went back to painting food dye all over the unfinished, ikea kitchen table, and I made a second attempt at the eggs. I couldn't seem to get the colours dark enough-- either you had colours that were too similar and you couldn't really see the marbling, or the eggs were just plain ugly. If I'm ever feeling really motivated, I'd like to dye a base coat & let it dry, then marble it in oil paint. But since these were for eating, I figured I'd better keep it nontoxic. The day I try empty egg shells with preschoolers is the day hell freezes over ....
